Languages as Tools for Empowerment: PIPE at the CIISE’25 Conference

As part of the VII International Conference on Social and Educational Inclusion (CIISE’25), held in Bilbao from May 8 to 10, the PIPE project took the stage to share an inspiring and deeply relevant contribution to the field of inclusive education. The conference, focused on “Education for Social Transformation: Challenges and Opportunities,” brought together voices from across the academic and social spectrum to reflect on pathways to reduce exclusion and promote equity.

On May 9, the Critical Pedagogies Research Team (PEDACRI) from the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL) presented their work titled “Palabras que escuchan: Equidad de género en la enseñanza de idiomas para personas migrantes.” The virtual presentation offered a compelling reflection on how language education, when grounded in feminist and intersectional principles, can become a powerful instrument for inclusion and dignity.

The PIPE team emphasized the importance of creating learning environments where migrant women feel heard, seen, and safe—not only to learn a new language, but to reclaim their narratives and strengthen their voices. Moving beyond traditional models, the approach presented challenges educators to rethink language teaching as a transformative practice, rooted in human rights, intercultural understanding, and gender equity.

Inspired by the Pedagogy of Interlinguistic Hospitality, this work encourages the use of inclusive language, storytelling, and dialogic methodologies as means of building bridges between cultures and experiences. It also underlines the necessity of training teachers to engage critically with issues of gender, power, and migration, equipping them to respond meaningfully to the needs of diverse learners.

All educational materials and tools developed within the PIPE framework are made available on the project’s online platform: pipe-platform.eu, contributing to a growing ecosystem of open, accessible, and socially engaged resources.
